My Story

My name is Alexandria St. Rose, and I hold a Master’s degree in Adult Gerontology Primary Care from the University of Miami, where I graduated in 2018. Afterward, I began working with a nephrology group, treating patients with chronic kidney disease and those on dialysis—many of whom were in very poor health.

Throughout my time at the University of Miami, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Looking back, I realize I had experienced joint pain since my early career as a registered nurse in 2013, but it wasn’t until my nurse practitioner studies that I was formally diagnosed. I had also struggled with eczema and anxiety from childhood, eventually starting medication for anxiety during my NP program. After my RA diagnosis, I was prescribed disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), which significantly alleviated my joint pain.

However, I was determined not to rely on medication long-term. This motivated me to explore alternative approaches, focusing on diet and lifestyle changes. I eventually weaned off all medications, began working with a personal trainer, and committed to a regular gym routine—3-4 times a week. I also got married, and for a while, I felt like I had "healed," no longer needing a cane to walk.

Two years later, I gave birth to my first child—one of the happiest days of my life. But just six weeks postpartum, I began to experience joint pain again. I initially hoped the discomfort would be short-lived, but my blood pressure also spiked, and a week later, I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a car. What was supposed to be a joyful moment in my life turned into a nightmare. I could barely hold my baby, and my body—especially my hands, fingers, and joints—was in excruciating pain. Even eating was difficult due to intense jaw pain.

As I returned to work, I was taking Advil several times a day just to manage the pain. I also resumed steroids and DMARDs, believing I’d feel better within a month. Despite strict dietary changes, including eating only grass-fed meats, fruits, and vegetables, I saw no improvement. It wasn’t until a colleague recommended Dr. Amy Myers’ book, The Autoimmune Solution, that I considered exploring a different path. Although I followed the book’s advice, I still felt no relief after a month.

The book suggested seeking help from a functional medicine provider if symptoms didn’t improve, so I began looking for a local practitioner. Initially, the cost of functional medicine consultations was out of my budget, so I decided to remain patient and stick to my diet. However, after another month of no progress, I decided to proceed with the consultation and commit to the treatment plan.

Advanced lab tests revealed significant nutrient deficiencies and candida overgrowth. After following the recommended protocol, I experienced a breakthrough in just two weeks. That’s when I knew I wanted to apply this same holistic, root-cause-focused approach in my own practice. My experience sparked a deep passion for helping others not just manage symptoms, but heal from the inside out by addressing underlying issues and emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition.
